About Percentage Calculator
A percentage is a way to express a number as a fraction of 100. The word "percent" comes from the Latin "per centum" meaning "by the hundred". The basic formula for calculating percentage is: (Value / Total) × 100
Percentage Use Cases in India
| Use Case | Formula | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Marks Percentage | (Obtained/Total) × 100 | 450/500 = 90% |
| Discount | MRP - (MRP × Discount%/100) | ₹1000 - 20% = ₹800 |
| GST | Amount × (1 + GST%/100) | ₹1000 + 18% = ₹1180 |
| Profit % | (SP - CP)/CP × 100 | (₹1000 - ₹800)/₹800 = 25% |
| Salary Hike | (New - Old)/Old × 100 | (₹60000 - ₹50000)/₹50000 = 20% |
How to Calculate Marks Percentage
To calculate marks percentage in India (for CBSE, ICSE, State boards), use this formula:
Percentage = (Total Marks Obtained / Total Maximum Marks) × 100
Example: If you scored 450 out of 500 marks:
Percentage = (450 / 500) × 100 = 90%
CGPA (CBSE) = 90 / 9.5 = 9.47
Difference Between Profit % and Margin %
Many business owners confuse profit percentage with margin percentage. Here's the difference:
- Profit % is calculated on Cost Price: ((SP - CP) / CP) × 100
- Margin % is calculated on Selling Price: ((SP - CP) / SP) × 100
Example: CP = ₹800, SP = ₹1000
Profit % = (₹200 / ₹800) × 100 = 25%
Margin % = (₹200 / ₹1000) × 100 = 20%
CBSE CGPA to Percentage Formula
CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) uses the following formula to convert CGPA to percentage:
Percentage = CGPA × 9.5
Example: If your CGPA is 8.5:
Percentage = 8.5 × 9.5 = 80.75%
For Mumbai University: Percentage = CGPA × 7.1 + 11
GST Add/Remove Formula
GST (Goods and Services Tax) calculation in India:
- Add GST: Final Price = Base Amount × (1 + GST%/100)
- Remove GST: Base Amount = Final Price / (1 + GST%/100)
Example: Base ₹1000 + 18% GST
Final Price = ₹1000 × 1.18 = ₹1180
GST Amount = ₹180 (split as CGST ₹90 + SGST ₹90)
